The Catlins

The last few days of my trip with Russ were spent down south around the Catlins. The Catlins are a long stretch of the southeast coast that offer beautiful views, trails, waterfalls, caves and fishing.  The only downside is that they get heaps of rain, which hindered some of our views.

I have some friends, Murray and Jan Marie, who own a house on the water, which they so kindly let us stay in.  It was in a quiet little town called Pounawea.  Murray is big into fishing and volunteers as a hunting and fisheries officer.  The area is filled with Paua, mussels and several varieties of fish.  Unfortunately, they weren't able to make it down with us, but Murray said next time we can go out fishing.  Russ caught a Blue Cod while in Doubtful Sound, so he had his fishing fun.

We watched a beautiful sunset, drank some wine and played Yahtzee.  They had tons of board games and puzzles, which made for a lot of fun.  We had such a good time on this quiet little cove.

The pictures below are along the Catlins coast.

Bluff is the furthest town south, but Slope Point is the most southern point of New Zealand.

I have a feeling that the rugged cliff like coast, the rain and the green hills would be a lot like Ireland and Scotland.

Beautiful sunset in Pounawea.  Great way to spend our last night in the Catlins.
